Biometric documents
1) THE BIOMETRIC PASSPORT
- The validity of the biometric passport is 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors under 19.
- The biometric passport is an individual document. As a result, minors must hold an individual passport and can no longer have their names and photos added to their parents’ passports.
- Personal appearance is required for photograph taking and fingerprint data collection.
- Personal presence is required for biometric passport submission and for pickup. Kids exempted from electronically scanned fingerprints at application submission day, do not need to be present for pick-up.
- Biometric passports are issued in Algeria. This procedure requires a minimum period of 6 weeks between the facial and fingerprint recognition operation and passport reception.
Applying in the Embassy of Algeria in Washington
Required Documents:
- Biometric passport Form to be dully filled out.
- If the application concerns a child his/her legal guardian must fill out the Annex of the form.
- Original and a Copy of valid Consular registration card.
- Expired passport, or that will expire in less than 06 months. It is strongly recommended to make copies of all pages of your expired passport (for non US-Citizens)
- Applicant's S12 Birth Certificate (Original and copy).
- Original and a copy of a document showing the legal presence in the US, such as: Visa, Alien Registration Card (“Green Card”) or copy of US passport.
- Statement of employment or school registration.
- Proof of address in the consular circumscription of the Embassy of Algeria in Washington D.C.
- Three (3) standard passport-size photos. Photos must be recent, frontal-view, of the same batch, untouched, taken on white background and showing applicant wearing no glasses of any kind, except for prescription eyewear. Please write first and last names of applicant in pencil on back of photos.
- Blood type card or certificate / a Form to be dully filled out.
- If the concerned person would like to receive his/her/their passport(s) by postal mail, please join a US Postal Service prepaid (self-addressed) envelope. In the absence of a prepaid envelope (self-addressed), the concerned person will be invited to take an appointment to pick up his/her/their passport(s), at the Consular Section of the Embassy of Algeria in Washington D.C.
Photos requirements:
- Photos must be 3,5 cm X 4,5 cm (1,4" X 1,9").
- The color background must be white and no frame.
- The size of the face must be between 32 mm and 36 mm or fill 75% of the picture.
- The face must appear in the center of the picture.
- Photos must be no older than six months and give a perfect representation of the applicant’s features on application day.
Notice: Photos that don't meet the requirements above will be REJECTED
Biometric Passport Fee:
An individual U.S Post Office money-order. No other forms of payment are accepted. Made payable to the order of the Embassy of Algeria according to the following amounts:
- For 28-page passport:
- 75 US$ for adults (19 years and over).
- 37.5 US$ for minor and students.
- For 48-page passport:
- 112.5 US$ for adults (19 years and over).
- 56.25 US$ for minor and students.

In case of lost, stolen or damaged passport:
In addition to the documents listed above, please provide:
- The Form (download) of declaration dully filled out, signed and legalized by a public notary, explaining in details how the passport has been lost, stolen or damaged.
- Payment of additional fee of $125 as a penalty (to be paid by US post office money order only).

Passport for a child:
A minor is entitled to an individual passport at any age and is no longer permitted to add his/her photo on his/her parent’s passport.
- In addition to the documents listed above, the issuing of a passport to a minor (under 19 years) is subject to a written Parental authorization by the father or by the legal guardian who must sign the relevant form (download).
Notice:
- The passport’s Service of the Consular Section will inform by phone the applicant(s) of the date of his/her/their appointment to proceed to the biometric enrollment.
- As soon as the passport(s) is/are available, it will be sent to the concerned person(s) by the provided prepaid (self-addressed) US Postal Service envelope. Otherwise, the concerned person will be invited, in due time, to call the Consular Section of the Embassy of Algeria in Washington D.C. to have an appointment in order to pick it up his/her/their passport(s).
- It should be noted that in accordance with art. 10 of the law n° 14-03 of 24 Rabie Ethani 1435 corresponding to 24 February 2014 relating to permits and travel documents: “Any passport drawn up and not withdrawn by its holder is destroyed six (06) months after the date of the notice of withdrawal which was addressed to him/her:”.

2) NATIONAL IDENTITY CARD
Requirements:
- Valid consular registration card.
- Application Form available at the Embassy.
- Three (3) similar recent passport-sized photographs.
- Expired National Identity Card.
- No fee is required.
3) 12S BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Registred Algerian Citizens who are residents in the following (06) US States (North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington-DC) are eligible to submit application for 12-S birth certificate at the Algerian Embassy in Washington, D.C
For the other (44) US States, please submit your application to the General Consulate of Algeria in New York.
12S - Nationals born in Algeria
This document is issued once in a lifetime and is mandatory for the issuance of the biometric passport.
The 12s birth certificate can be obtained from:
- The Algerian city hall of the place of birth.
- The Ministry of the Interior website.

12S - Nationals born in US
- The ministry of foreign affairs or the Embassy. Required documents for persons born in US:
- Application form filled out in Arabic and French.
- Registration card.
- The family book.
12S - Nationals born neither in US nor in Algeria
a) If the applicant`s birth is transcribed at the Embassy / Consulate of Algeria in the country of the applicant`s birth.
- Send to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C a copy of the applicant ID or the one of the tutor.
- Send to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C a copy of the Family book in case of its availability.
- Submit to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C the written application asking for 12-S.
b) If the applicant`s birth is not transcribed at the Embassy / Consulate of Algeria in the country of the applicant`s birth
- Send to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C the original birth certificate
- Send to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C a Descriptive form downloadable at our website in CIVIL STATUS to be filled in Arabic and French )
- Send to Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C a copy of the applicant ID or the one of his tutor.
In both cases, The Algerian Embassy in Washington - D.C will forward the application to the suitable Algerian Embassy/consulate where normally the applicant`s 12-s owes to be issued (i.e. Embassy / Consulate of Algeria in the country of the applicant`s birth.) via The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers.
